What a genuine curiosity, and, as a such, a collector's item. It's a tribute to the astonishing array of sidemen that Nick Cave's vocal inadequacies don't make this sound like some sort of put-on. Sanborn on soprano (wow!), Toots, Hiram, and that most protean of musical personalities, Haden, make this something really, really special. (But they should have played more, and he should have sung less.)

What an assembly of grand talent. Toots, Hiram, Charlie, David... How the heck did Nick Cave sneak in there? The only thing that saved that song from becoming a hatchet job of the highest degree is the personnel behind Cave. Toots, as usual, takes the harp to a new level.

Nick Cave probably "snuck" in there by being the perfect match for this particular arrangement. It may also have something to do with the fact that he's one of the greatest songwriters ever. Or that he's a musical icon. Or any other of a long list along those lines.

I'm actually a fan of Cave, but I personally think he blew the vocals here, while the performance going on behind him was masterful. He looked "out of place" that's all I'm saying. He may have achieved iconic status for some over the years, but he's just a kid here.
