Well at least I'm glad hearing that you DID like the dub aside from Van der Beek. Despite what its harshest detractors say, it is by no means an unlistenable dub and I do enjoy listening to it unreservedly, as I do all th Ghibli dubs.
"The man" is ... ( 1 month ago by Turnajon)
"The man" is certainly OK with the dubs, and I do not believe that they are spoiled in any way.
In fact I think the accusations that Disney has somehow tainted Laputa are wrong, so very, very wrong! It does give a different interpretation of the film, true, but it's still charming in its own right.

i thought the spirited away dub was okay except for haku. way better in japanese. anyway this movie is great but i never watched the dubbed version
A perfect harmony ... ( 1 month ago by ViktorDragmire)
A perfect harmony of wood and metal. Laputa fueled my interest in Steampunk and flying things. Also inspired me to get a pilot's license! I also did not find Van der Beek's performance as Pazu the best. During the actual dubbing of the film, Van der Beek's voice was risen half an octave give or take to give the illusion that he was a few years younger. "The Man" liked it however, I shall continue to watch it!

Good that you're continuing to give the dub a chance; Vanderbeek may not have been the BEST performance in the dub, but the overall dub itself still warrants a listen, if mainly for Dola and Muska--those two have excellent actors. And of course the music is beautiful.
I personally think even if Disney HAD chosen someone else to play Pazu, I think there would have been complaints either way because most fans are impossible to please when it comes to dubs
(continued from ... ( 1 month ago by Turnajon)
(continued from above) Besides, before Disney's version came out there wer people who carped all over the Streamline dub. Fans who dislike dubbing no matter what... there's just no satisfying them no matter what.
It is important to note, however, that these dubs are mainly made for a mainstream audience who would otherwise avoid subtitled movies, and so some changes are necessary. While some of them in this film are excessive at times, at least it's not like "Warriors of the Wind".

I'm one of those people who can't trust dubs. Remember that line they added at the end of Spirited Away? That's really all I have to say.
Actually, the ... ( 1 month ago by Turnajon)
Actually, the reason they added those lines in at the end is because initial reaction from the Japanese audiences to that film was one of dissastisfaction, almost as if there was something "incomplete" about it. The English script writers wanted to resolve that issue, and guess what? Miyazaki was OK with it. And that pretty much sums up how he feels about the dubs and the arguments of adding in extra lines.
Why should ... ( 3 weeks ago by FatManRedemption)
Why should audiences be complaining? Are these the same people who want happy 1940's endings to every freakin' movie they see? Like Whisper of the Heart. I really liked that movie, but the ending just felt so weird. "wanna get married?" "kay" "I LOVE YOU!" In some ways, it felt like a real cop-out ending, but on the other hand, we all had the feeling it was heading there. Just not so abruptly. But I was in some sort of dreamer/romantic mood when I saw that movie, so it was okay.
Alright. Say you ... ( 3 weeks ago by FatManRedemption)
Alright. Say you were a foreigner reading a "translated" version of "Catcher in the Rye". Sure, they changed a few lines and character traits here and there, and the ending was shoved in your face rather than implied, but hey, it was charming in its own right, right?

Yes that is correct. I want to write a book titled laputa about a magical floating island (nothing like the one in Gullviers Travels or the movie) but i dunno. would it be classed as plagarism?

thanks -.- no shit -.- I'm well aware of this. I use my imagination all the time, but I can't think of what to call it. Lots of writers have this problem.
