I'm only 1/4 Nigerian but you obviously don't know a lot about your own country. In some African cultures, being fat is a symbol of good life and wealth. In parts of Nigeria, girls and soon-to-be-brides are force-fed to make them plump and attractive. So your comment is slightly stereotypical.
