Uploaded by: AlJazeeraEnglish
Video Description:
Ezra Levy is one of the last of his kind - a Jew in Iraq. His tale is a quest for lost love, a woman called Daisy whom he last saw Ezra Levy is one of the last of his kind - a Jew in Iraq. His tale is a quest for lost love, a woman called Daisy whom he last saw more than 50 years ago. Clutching a photo of the young, beautiful Daisy, the spry 85-year-old sets off for Israel and a family he has not seen for many years. Once there, Ezra challenges the assumption that in an anti-Semitic world, Jews are better off in Israel than elsewhere.

a little lesson of ... ( 1 month ago by shanoni79)
a little lesson of history jews were originated from Ur of caldea, Ur of caldea is what is calles now iraq, so if we look back to history Abraham wasnt even cananite, he was an arab jews are arabs this is according to biblical history but some people dont accepted.
matter of fact you ... ( 4 weeks ago by MayaKLan)
matter of fact you are right about jews being from iraq, however the arabs come from the arab peninsula and the arab invasion of this region didnt begin until almost 2000 years after abrahams life. saying this, jews and arab have both quite a lot of shared dna, names the J1 strand. jews and phoenicians (the palestinians, the lebanese, the syrians and turks) have even more in common genetically. we are all related. what a shame we cannot live together.
matter of fact 73% ... ( 4 weeks ago by MayaKLan)
matter of fact 73% of israelis are secular- non religious. you need to distinct judaism (the religion) with jew (the people) we are genetically a people, like the arabs, like the natie americans etc. we come from 12 tribes. as for discriminate, you are riht the arab jews, who were 850,000 refugeesfrom the arab countries in 1948, still hold resentment for the way they were treated.

Yes Maya, thers still some resentment for the way Mizrahim was treated by the ashkenazi "mimsad" from 50 years ago-BUT from what I look at on all this video and sites on internet, they R try to exploit these old feeling to separate diffrent jews from each other in Isreal. No? The truth is, yeah you find still some snob ashkenazim but its mostly in the past. I'm "chatsi chatsi" ashkenazi-sefaradi, and also my wife, all this diffrences are begining to go away-only wer'e JEWISH and Israeli.

and if you study the histry, yes, its true Bengurion
Mapai made a lot of discrimnation aganst the olim from eidot ha mizrah but when you look in context and study history-you see also in the "old yishuv"-there was also problems betwen sefardim and the 1st ashkenazim in the country. I am talking about in the days of the Turk in Jeruslam, Safat, etc. Then the "mimsad" in erets yisrael was sefaradi, and they made a lot of problem when first came a lot of ashkenazi olim in the cuontry. so its both

yosef, and with full right. i have to say, being ashkenazia i have always found the mizrahi cultures and vareid amazing food, family morals and beauty to be something to look up to. when i look at pictures of my classroom growing up- i am proud of all the shades of colour of skin, i am also (and you are too) aware of the amounts of mized marriages in israel. i believe within a few generations it wont be mizrahi and ashkenazi, it will just be jews. beautiful jews:-)

So you think one can't bee both an Arab and a Jew? is it because of the conflict, or is it that you regard Jewishness as a religion and a race as well?

First of all, the ashkenazim were orignaly mizrahim anyway...
כולנו מאותו מוצא, המוצא שלנו במזרח the German
French antisemittes writed about Jews(and they were talking about ashkenazim) like they were from the "Orient" and remember what Rav Yehuda halevi said- about the Jewish people "my heart its in the EAST" "
לבי במזרח -אנוכי בסוף מערב" I am also half ashkenazi and I am proud too of teh ashkenazi culture. My moter make gefilte fish!! :-)
Hmm, I suppose in ... ( 3 weeks ago by YehudiMaamin)
Hmm, I suppose in theory there could be such a thing as an "Arab Jew" if there was such a country as "Arabia" (I know that there is Saudi Arabia, but it has no Jewish citizens). For example, one can be a German Jew, that means one is a German-speaking Jew, born in Germany, who is a citizen of that nation. But to say "Arab Jew" you have to posit the idea of an overarching political entity known as "Arab-dom".Arab nationalists may wish for the creation of it, but it doesn't exist, at least not yet.
What I mean, is, ... ( 3 weeks ago by YehudiMaamin)
What I mean, is, clearly one can be an Egyptian Jew, a Syrian Jew, an Iraqi Jew, a Morrocan Jew etc... because all those countries exist but "Arab Jew"? No such thing! I don't view Jews a "race" however. I don't view Arabs as a "race", either. There are many Jews who are and were part of Arabic-language culture, but I'm not sure that means they were "Arabs". And, the truth is, Arab nationalist culture rejected the few Jews who wanted to participate in it. There were no Jews in the Ba'ath party.
Ultimately, anyone ... ( 3 weeks ago by YehudiMaamin)
Ultimately, anyone should be free to choose his or her own identity, if Arabic-speaking Jews from Arab countries wish to embrace "Arab-ness" that's their right--if the Arab societies will reciprocate and embrace them. I find it cynical the way this elderly gent was presented in the video though-the fact is, very few "Arab" Jews thought as he did, very few were embraced by Arab society, and most voted with their feet and moved to Israel. He wants to be Arab, fine, but who is he to scold others?
no that is ... ( 3 weeks ago by MayaKLan)
no that is incorrect, jews and arabs have so much genetics in common its scary. we are the closest two people second only to the phoenicians. but jews have specific dna that defers us from arabs, and arabs too. so its hard to answer your question, you see? jew can be an arab jew to some extendt and arabs can too (genetically) be jewish arabs to some extent (as with the saudis)

Maya--you shouldn't ... ( 3 weeks ago by YehudiMaamin)
Maya--you shouldn't confuse issues of genetics and "race" with "culture" and "national identity". Yes, Jews and Arabs have a common ancestral lineage, whether you accept the religious account or the scientific account. Yes, they speak related Semitic languages. The issue is more complex, however, if you consider the so-called "Arab Jews". For that, you have to examine the issue of Arab nationalism, which is largely a 20th century phenomenon. (to be continued)
(continued) In ... ( 3 weeks ago by YehudiMaamin)
(continued) In theory, pan-Arab nationalism embraces all Arab-speakers as members of one Arab nation stretching from Morocco to Iraq, regardless of religion. But the truth, WITH EXCEPTIONS, Jews were largely excluded from this ideology (and to be honest most of them excluded themselves as well). Historically, very few Arab-nationalist thinkers declared--we accept our Jewish brothers and sisters as fellow Arabs. And most of the "Arab" Jews preferred to identify as Jews or Zionists.
The odd thing is " ... ( 3 weeks ago by YehudiMaamin)
The odd thing is "davka" NOW many Arabs are making a big fuss of how they love "their" Jews--some 60 years after they expelled most of them from their countries, and I view this as a super-cynical attempt to divide Jews in Israel from one another on the basis of ethnic differences--now that the (
הנושא העדתי) is almost dead in Israel--they want to revive the Jewish inter-ethnic tensions to split us up. So they find some old people who winge on about how they miss Iraq.
even more distorted ... ( 3 weeks ago by MayaKLan)
even more distorted than that (i agree with you completely! just last week yemen refused to allow 150 jews from ammigrating to israel- the opposite of expulsion- forced citizenship!) but the most common saying now is "im not anti jews, im anti zionism. well, as israel comprises of 47% of the jews, wanting to kill zionists is wanting a GENOCIDE of jews. simple as that. its like saying i have nothing against dogs, but i want to kill just the ones with tails. hidden agenda.
