Berlin Phil are playing Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique tonight LSO are playing Bruckner 7 and Schubert 8 tmw night The Vienna Phil are putting on a concert of both richard and johann strauss on the 3rd june, including music of ravel, chabrier and offenbach you rarely find american composers on european bills, and for good reason. In Western music there are 12 tones. There are Russian, Spanish, German
French "Schools," After 250 years, there is now an American "School." Those who view music from an exclusive standpoint - jazz, classic, hip-hop, Broadway, Euro-centric, etc. only prove the unlimited power of music to express that which words cannot. Copland possessed an American eloquence built from an assimilated Jewish culture, ability to see greatness in all, his homosexuality and his educated intelligence.

The best American orchestrated works is being composed for films right now, and because of a certain level of snobishness in Europe and the States it doesn't get the respect it deserves, however you will probably find more Clicks on Anvil of Crom from Conan than anything by Shubert on here, and given time more orchestras will be playing the cinematic scores as part of their repertoire

I didn't know Copland was homosexual (not that it really matters, but more of a trivial matter).
This has to be one of the most moving pieces of American music. People can worship Mozart and Bach, which were both good, but distant in sound. This song swells me up with pride everytime I hear it. Like it did in band class in Jr. high.
