But in Dov'e sei, amato bene, no one can touch Scholl. "emotion" is different things to different listeners. For me, Daniels is hard to take because his voice is so imprecise. Yes, histrionically Daniels is impressive, but at the expense of the runs. Plus, I find he barks a bit when he needn't ("Ombra mai fu"? Why? It's about a tree!) Still, fine singers, all, to be sure.

Thank-you for your response! Perhaps I should like to compare Scholl's usual renditions(particularly in opera
oratorio) to the ultimate countertenor (my preference in every genre) Michael Chance. And you are quite correct in your alluding to the fact that we all perceive and react very differently to music, especially to that of the human voice.

I agree with 32Styx, this performance was almost sterile. I didn't hear any of the tension of a warrior who is trapped in the den of his adversary, in Scholl's voice. I know Scholl can put an astonishing range of expression in his voice, I've heard him do it on other occasions, but this here wasn't his best moment. Well, at least the french horn player was excellent, whoever he was.

It's good to know that someone else feels the same way about this rendition. It seems that ANY criticism of Scholl is like raising a 'red flag' in front of some listeners.

I know what you mean, but there's even worse. Try saying anything critical about Glenn Gould around here. Now, that's where you'll have to run for your live. :-D Many fans of classical music are no better than football fans. Touch their holy cow and they'll break your bones.

I hear lots of tension, but it's all coming from the orchestra. I agree on the dignity, though.

I like this rendition of this aria. You don't have to be an expert as to what is happening. The performance is sound and the staging is good. Very enjoyable. Thanks.

orchestra is outstanding. negative comments about Scholl duly noted, I find it a first-rate performance. the staging makes clear that they want him to appear confident and powerful, and thats what i think hes going for- but if you wanted tension, you sure don't have it.

Agreed -- they didn't want Tolomeo to really come across as someone to be taken seriously just yet. That was rather nice; he's revealed as increasingly slimy and much more dangerous as time goes on, which gives him (Tolomeo) a perceived character evolution that he lacks otherwise.

I do love Scholl's voice, as always, but think the error here is in the balance. This is supposed to be a duet between the horn and the voice. The orchestra as a whole need to tone it down, especially the bass, as the horn is getting lost. It is the interplay between the horn and the voice which should create the atmosphere in this piece

FWIW, that exact balance that you describe leapt out at me when I listened to this for the first time. My first and most powerful impression was the horns, and how his voice and they kept trading off. So the effect definitely came through, especially to someone who hadn't heard the aria before.
