African American Albino Shares Her Life - Documentary

Uploaded by: IjabaFilms
Video Description:
Join us for an intimate look into the life of Charise Johnson, a vibrant young African-American woman with a 10-year-old son and a busy life. When you first see her you can tell right away she's different. Charise has Albinism. And when you get to know her you will discover she really is different and there's nothing wrong with that.
In 1974, when Charise was born, a childhood free of major health problems is not what life had in store for her. At the age of nine she was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. By the time Charise became an adult, she'd had several surgeries, a temporary ostomy bag, and ultimately had her large inte
stines removed entirely; after which she developed Crohn's disease. Arthritis has left her in need of knee replacements and a lifetime of damage to her skin from the sun has lead to re-occurring skin cancers. Charise, being blessed with a mature and supportive family had incredible support througho
ut her developmental years. They are what kept her grounded when the social pains far outweighed her physical ills. There was no shortage of bullies and teasers in Charise's life. Even as an adult she can't escape the verbal abuse of strangers with statements like "what are you?". In "Charise: A P
ortrait of an African American with Albinism", Charise shares with us, her pains and her joys. She talks about her family life and what it is like having Albinism from medical, social and personal perspectives. Directed by: Tressa Sanders For more information about the documentary, please visit: ww

Why her eyes are black? I thought it was supposed to be kind of red...
Her eyes are not ... ( 3 months ago by IjabaFilms)
Her eyes are not black. They are blue. Not all people with Albinism have red eyes (which aren't really red anyway, they simply don't have pigment). Red/pink appearing eyes are the rarest amont people with Albinism.

I'm a female African American albino, and I identify with SO much of what was in this preview. I will encourage everyone who says they are my friends, but don't really UNDERSTAND to see this. Thanks for being strong enough to make this. I think it'll help others understand specifically what african americans with albinism go through.

Seriously, you shouldn't assume that black women aren't affected by ideals about beauty. Our eyebrows aren't thin unless we pluck/wax/shave them just like anyone else. Also Charise has eyebrows but they are white. So if you are judging by people with Albinism, you are seeing eyebrows that are white/blonde and hard to see unless you are up close.

I meant it more in an inquisitive way. not trying to refer to beauty :/ the girls in the vids I've seen made it feel like that was a sort of common genetic predisposition for the way alot of Africans' eyebrows grow. I just thought it was interesting and thought It might've had a relation to how africans' eyebrows often blend in with their own pigment. I think africans with thicker eyebrows begin to look indian :/ Just trying to determine what makes races look a certain way. anyway nice vid :)
